THE MASSEY MANSION (built 1883)

This impressive residence is designated under the Ontario Heritage Act for both architectural and historical reasons. Architect E. J. Lennox originally designed it for Charles Massey in 1883.

In March 2006 Massey Mansion reopened as private York College of Industry and Technology.
Once built for Charles Massey, after it became property of Chester D. Massey, the father of two famous Canadians – actor, Raymond Massey and politician and later, Governor General Vincent Massey.
Lennox's design was executed in a Queen Anne style. Sproatt and Rolph Architects added classical additions in 1910 including the picture gallery extension and the sandstone porte-cochere with sunroom above. Wonderfully detailed interior features remain.
It is also historically important through its association with three generations of the Massey family and their contributions to the industrial development of Toronto and to Canadian government and culture. The building has recently been extensively renovated to bring it back to its former splendor and is now home to York College of Industry and Technology (YCIT). The College is primarily a graduate school operating programs in the fields of Medicine, Business and Information Technologies. The current owners, the Snider family, chose to use the “York” name in recognition of the fact that Toronto was so named when their family arrived in 1810.
